Luke Ibbetson

HEAD OF GROUP R&D, VODAFONE

Luke has been with Vodafone since 1996 and is currently heading the Vodafone Group Research and Development organisation. Luke is responsible for all aspects of network research including Vodafone’s participation in international standards, pilots and commercial trials of emerging technologies, evolution of mobile security and defining the architectural blueprint for Vodafone’s future networks. Luke led Vodafone’s exploration of alternative access solutions and directly shaped Vodafone’s 4G strategy.Prior to joining Vodafone Luke worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Leeds for over six years, undertaking contract research for companies including BT Laboratories and Cellnet (now Telefonica O2). Luke was responsible for developing one of the earliest GSM simulation capabilities and has a long term passion for all things wireless. Luke graduated from the University of Leeds with a first degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering and was awarded an MSc by Research in 1992. Luke holds Chartered Engineer status with the Institute of Engineering Technology. Luke is married and has two children. He is also NGMN Board Member.
